Kingsessing's History

Kingsessing is a neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia. It starts on 47th street and ends on the border of 58th street close to Cobbs Creek and 60th street. The name Kingsessing comes from the Delaware Indian word for “ a place where there is a meadow”. The Kingsessing area was originally settled by Swedes in 1644, making Kingsessing the oldest settled area in the Philadelphia County. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kingsessing went from being a farmland to a populated residential area with workingmen, clerks and other middle class people. Today, the neighborhood is predominately African-American.
